Walking into Good Health

The weather is finally starting to improve and the slippery snow and ice is gone.  It will soon be time to dust off the shoes and start doing one of the best forms of exercises; walking.  Walking is a very healthy activity that can be enjoyed by most age groups and it is an inexpensive sport that does not require advanced equipment or skills to do.  Neepawa has ample areas for walking such as the fitness trail at Riverbend Park, good sidewalks, the town gym, and the Yellowhead Arena (for winter walking).

Walking is known to help numerous serious health conditions. A recent cardiac study has illustrated that the chance of a heart attack can be decreased by 50% by simply walking 1 hour a week.  This could be as easy as walking to work or mowing your lawn.  Osteoporosis can also be helped by walking because it is a weight bearing activity.  Studies show that bone deposition in the hips and back moderately improves with a regular walking routine.  Weight loss is yet another benefit of walking.  It is estimated that 25% of Canadians are obese.  All it takes is one half hour of moderate paced walking everyday, with no change in diet, to reduce pounds for most obese people.  The beneficial list of walking can go on and on from improved cholesterol levels to stress reduction.

The best way to start a walking routine is to write your self out a plan.  By putting something on paper you commit yourself to it.  Start out with simply 5 minutes a day.  This could mean parking your car at the end of the lot so that you walk farther to the door.  Next, work your way up to one half hour a day.  It is better to keep the same time for walking and make it into a ritual.  Walking with a friend will ensure you team up to help each other get out and get fit.

Get out and start moving those feet and walk your way into better health.
