Sciatica: What, How, and why

Sciatica isa very common presentation to my office and it affects both men and women of all ages. It is often a very painful disabling condition. The following outlines what the term sciatica means, common symptoms, and common causes.

Sciatica is a term that is used to describe a condition where a Lumbar (low back) or sacral (tail bone) spinal nerve is compressed and is causing pain into one or both legs. These nerves originate from the spine and come together to form the sciatic nerve, which then travels down the leg to supply all the necessary nerve supply to the lower limb. Sciatica can be of a gradual onset or due to trauma. The pain can be located in the buttocks, upper leg, or lower leg and foot.
