Protecting Independence in the Elderly

As our population continues to age the importance of maintaining activities of daily living and independence while doing so is of upmost importance. Recent statistics found that every year 1 in 3 Canadians over the age of 65 will have a fall. Such falls can be very debilitating to the elderly, especially if there is a hip, wrist or pelvic fracture. This can often rob them of the ability to take care of themselves, and may cause a downward spiral in other areas of their health. Preventing the risk of falls is a concern as we age and when caring for our elderly. This can easily be done and make a huge difference.

First off, make sure that all clutter and loose rugs are removed from the home, as they can easily be trip hazards. Ensure that supportive footwear is worn in the house, that it is secure on the foot and has a non slip sole. Good lighting throughout the house during the daytime is important, and place nightlights in the bedroom, bathroom and hallways. Make sure that transfer into and out of the bath is easy, install assistive devises if necessary. Check eyesight and hearing annually. Consult your physician if you are on more than four prescribed medications, as some side effects can cause dizziness, confusion, or sedation which may contribute to your risk of falling. Balance, strength, and coordination testing should be done. If necessary consult a qualified health care professional, physiotherapist, chiropractor, or personal trainer about setting up a strengthening program.

Taking the time to keep risks of falling in the home to a minimum is important. These simple steps can go a long way to maintaining the independence of our aged population.
