Your Feet: Is your Foundation Solid?

Your feet hit the ground hundreds of times  a day, thousands of times a week and millions of times in a year.  The foot  acts as a shock absorber, a balance mechanism, a propulsion system, and a sensory organ. When feet are working properly, you do not even realize they are there.  When they are not.. ask anyone that has had foot trouble just how bad it can be!

The most common presenting foot complaints in our office are: plantar facitis, arch pains, arthritis, sprains, strains, and heal spurs. The best way to prevent foot problems is to listen to your feet.  When your feet first start to hurt, it is time to do something about it. Usually your feet are telling you they need a new pair of shoes or more support.   Feet problems that persist for long periods often turn into chronic tendinitis problems.

One of the main causes of foot pain is due to the natural aging of the feet.  As one ages, the ligaments that support the foot sometimes stretch due to years of repetitive use.  This causes the arch to fall in the foot and produce conditions such as plantar facitis or heel spurs.  The normal adult arch in the standing position should have enough room to accommodate two or three fingertips, up to the first finger joint.  Your feet might also be overworked due to prolonged standing or walking.  Usually a good shock absorbing insole helps these conditions. Foot problems are also commonly caused by your genetic make up.  If you look at your parents feet, you are usually blessed with the same type of problems.

Feet are very important and should be treated as so.  Always remember to treat feet right away so that a chronic condition does not appear.  If you have any questions or concerns about foot problems always consult your health care professional.
