What to do with a Colic Child

Infantile colic affects approximately 20% of newborns and is a very big disturbance to the child and to normal family life.  The cause of colic is unknown at this time and is thought to be either a gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal problem that causes the baby to cry excessively.  Colic usually occurs in newborns and starts in the afternoon or evenings  with most Colic resolving (%47) within 3 months. However new studies and research have found insight into a quicker cure.

Colic can be caused by bottle- feeding your child too fast.  If the bottle is drank in under 20 minutes, you should check and see if the nipple hole is too large.  Also avoid over feeding the child at nights.  Infants can have varying degrees of lactose intolerance to breast milk or formula type milks.  Trying Soya base milk or goat’s milk may prove to be the cure. Some studies have also shown that raising the head end of the crib a small amount can help a colic baby.   Other proven treatments include chiropractic care.  A recent study out of Denmark, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, has shown a 94% improvement infants after a 3-treatment trial of chiropractic care.  This again addresses the possibility of colic being a musculoskeletal problem.

Other remedies include the old faithful methods such as a applying a hot water bottle to the abdomen of the infant, going of a car ride down a bumpy road, or turn the vacuum cleaner on to provide a constant noise.

If your baby is crying excessively the proper thing to do is to consult your health care provider and rule out any other possibilities.  If it is a case of true colic, try some of these tricks and you might just get full nights sleep!
